How Yoga Works: Understanding Its Impact
There's a delightful irony in leaving a transformative yoga class—filled with deep asanas, mindful pranayama, and a restful savasana—only to be met with, "Are you done with your workout?" from the outside world. What once might have irked me now only makes me smile quietly and enjoy the humor of the moment.
Yoga, with its roots dating back over 5,000 years into Indian philosophy, acts as an anchor of calm amidst our turbulent lives. It's far more than just the impressive poses often seen; yoga is fundamentally about discovering oneself, aligning body, mind, and soul. It invites us into the present by connecting deeply with our bodies and focusing on our breath, offering peace and a respite from the constant chatter of our thoughts.
Life often whirls us into a maze of thoughts and worries, but moments of simplicity, like the sound of the ocean or morning light through the curtains, draw us back to the now. Yoga encourages us to seek these moments intentionally, using the mat as more than a space for physical exercise but as a starting point for a deeper journey inward. As we focus on our breath, we find clarity and peace, moving beyond the physical through meditation and breath control, and discovering a state of being free from judgment and external pressures.
The primary aim of yoga is to restore the mind to simplicity and peace, and free it from confusion and distress.
B K S Iyengar
Incorporating yoga into our lives is about opening ourselves to a transformative journey of self-discovery. Every breath is a step toward our true selves, leading us to peace, joy, and a deep, profound connection with the present. Yoga shows us that the most significant moments of clarity and peace come from simply being, fully and wonderfully, ourselves.

One of my favourite things is to listen to inspiring talks about understanding this life while I'm practicing, cooking, walking, or just relaxing with a cup of tea. I stay focused on what I'm doing, but I love having these talks in the background. They keep me connected to my spiritual path, especially when I start overthinking. Here’s one I really enjoy, and I hope you do as well.
I’ll write again soon. Until then, keep practicing 🙏.
